Sonik off to blazing start in Dakar Rally

Rafal Sonik finished second in the quad category on Sunday during the first stage of the 36th Dakar Rally, which began in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The Krakow-born racer, who came second overall in the 2014 edition (his personal best in the rally) is hungry to go one step further this year.
The Dakar Rally is divided into 13 stages, crossing Argentina, Chile and Bolivia, with separate categories for motorbikes, quads, cars and trucks.
Fifteen Poles are competing this year in the the two-week rough terrain challenge.
Although Sonik was the only Pole to end the first stage on the podium on Sunday, Krzysztof Holowczyk came fifth in the car category, Marek Dabrowski came 15th and former ski-jumping ace Adam Malysz came 18th.
Meanwhile, Jakub Przygonski came 34th in the motorcycle category, followed by Jakub Piatek in 42nd place.
The trucking trio of Robin Szustkowski, Jarek Kazberuk and Filip Skrobanek managed to come in 37th on the first leg.
The 36th Dakar Rally will end where it started in Buenos Aires on 17 January. (nh)
