Anita Wlodarczyk set a new world record in the hammer throw on Sunday, managing a distance of 79.58m at the ISTAF Athletics Meeting in Berlin.

The 29-year-old, who won a gold medal in the European Championships last month, shaved 16 cm off the previous world record, which had been by German Betty Heidler since 2011.
Heidler herself finished second on Sunday, with a throw of 75.20m.

It is the third time that Wlodarczyk has broken the world record in her discipline, following throws of 77.96m in 2009 and 78.30 in 2010.
The Polish star is still holding out to cross the elusive 80m mark.
“I was aiming for 80 metres and I know I am able to throw it," she said after Sunday's event, as cited by the Associated Press. (nh)
