Legia crowned Polish champions

Sunday's 2-0 victory against Lech Poznan was a mere formality, as Legia's triumph in the league was confirmed on 24 May, when the Poznan side drew 0-0 with Pogon Szczecin, a result which gave Legia the cup with three games still unplayed.

Legia's Bartosz Bereszynski said that although first and second place in the league had already been confirmed before Sunday's match, it was still satisfying to show the runners-up who was boss.

“Lech wanted to show us how close they were to winning the championship, and we wanted to show them how far off it they were,” he told the Gazeta Wyborcza daily.

It was the second year in a row that the Poznan side came second to Legia, a bitter blow for Lech.

Meanwhile, Ruch Chorzow's 0-0 draw against Pogon Szczecin on Sunday was enough for the former to claim third place and bronze medals for the players.

Legia is the third most frequent winner in the history of the championship, having won the title 10 times. First place is held jointly by Ruch Chorzow and Gornik Zabrze, with 14 wins, while Wisla Krakow is in second place with 13. (nh)
