Kowalczyk, who has already won a gold for Poland in the 10 km cross country classic, in spite of battling with a foot injury, said she did her best in Wednesday's final.

“I'm not a superwoman,” she quipped after crossing the finishing line.

“After the race I sat down, pulled my foot out of my boot and after that I was unable to stand on it,” she said.

Norway took gold, with Kowalczyk's long-running rival Marit Bjoergen and Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg finishing in 16:04.17 minutes, some 9.09 seconds ahead of Finland's Aino-Kaisa Saarinen and Kerttu Niskanen.

Swedish pair Ida Ingemarsdotter and Stina Nillson came third with a time of 16:23.82 minutes, while the Poles managed 16:35.84 minutes.

Norway is now leading the overall medals' table, with 8 golds, 4 silvers and 7 bronzes. Poland is in ninth place with 4 golds. (nh)
