Third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska coasted through her match against Spaniard Silvia Soler-Espinosa, winning the encounter in straight sets: 6-1, 6-2.
The Pole took just 63 minutes to wrap things up at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, the focal venue of the Grand Slam tournament.
“The first match is always tough and it takes some time to get used to the conditions,” Radwanska said after the match, as cited by WTA.
“I'm just very happy that I could play my best tennis and get a win on Ashe on the first day,” she added.
It was exactly the positive start that the 24-year-old needed, as in spite of making the quarter-finals Grand Slam tournaments the French Open and the Australian Open, as well as the final of Wimbledon, she has never got beyond the 4th round of the US Open.
Meanwhile, younger sister Urszula followed in her sibling's footsteps by taking her match against Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu in straight sets: 6-1, 6-3.
Urszula Radwanska is currently ranked 38th in the WTA Tour ratings. (nh)
