In the pool, Oliwia Jablonska took silver in the 100m butterfly and Paulina Wozniak swam to a bronze medal in the women's 100 metre breaststroke.

Poland now has six medals in total at the Paralympic Games, after Anna Harkowska won a silver medal at the velodrome on Thursday.

The 26 year-old Katarzyna Piekart won gold in the javelin, setting a new world record of 41.15 metres in the F-46 (amputees) category.

The major surprise in the medal haul was the silver medal won by the 15 year-old Oliwia Jablonska from Wroclaw in the pool.

“That was awesome,” said Polish Paralympic Committee vice-president, Robert Szaj. “After 50 metres she was back in the fifth but then she had a fantastic finish.”

Under the coaching of Wojciech Seidel and Waldemar Madej, Oliwia, born with a club foot, was junior world champion in the in the 2010, where she won six medals; she also won a bronze medal in the European Championships last year in the 400 metres freestyle.

“I have trained for seven years, it's my passion,” Oliwia told the PAP news agency. “Despite my disability, I feel like a fish.” (pg)
