Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita described the alliance as a fundamental change in the balance of power in the European Union.
The coalition heralds a free-market drive that will allow Polish exporters of goods and services to fully develop on the common market, according to Rzeczpospolita.
The alliance includes the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the Baltic states, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, Portugal and Finland, the Polish daily reported.
Konrad Szymański, the Polish deputy foreign minister in charge of European affairs, was cited by Rzeczpospolita as saying that Warsaw has for several months been pressing for “a consolidation of states working in support of the common market.”
“This is our response to the growing risk of protectionism in the EU. We are also afraid of a political imbalance in economic matters after Brexit," Szymański was quoted as saying.
