Threats to NATO's eastern flank and US troops stationed in Poland were discussed when the US secretary of defence on Friday called Poland's defence minister, the Polish defence ministry has said.

US Secretary of Defence General James Mattis and Polish Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz also discussed Ukraine, terrorism and North Korea.
A statement by the Polish defence ministry said that Mattis raised the issue of Polish plans to purchase a Patriot missile defence system, which Macierewicz announced last September.
A Pentagon spokeswoman, Dana White, said Mattis thanked Macierewicz for the Polish government's pledge to earmark two percent of GDP for defence, as agreed at a 2014 NATO summit.
Mattis invited Macierewicz to meet him in Washington. (vb)
