The group of injured parties includes 47 Polish immigrants.
After almost 10 years of negotiations, the injured parties will receive compensation depending on the health status, age, and other issues.
Each will receive between USD 25,000 and USD 1.45 million.
“The most difficult challenge was to prove that the cause of the workers’ loss of health was due to the exposure to hazardous conditions at ground zero, and not prior work around asbestos, or smoking cigarettes,” case lawyer Gregory J. Cannata told the PAP news agency.
According to Cannata, because of the exposure to dust and toxic substances, many of the people involved in the clearing up of the World Trade Center site changed their lives completely.
“They were energetic people who loved their work. Now they don’t feel well, they are depressed, and their condition is deteriorating. (rg)
