Electricity prices to soar

Analysts have forecast that the cost of electricity in Poland will increase by a third over the next two years as the country attempts to fall in with the EU's climate policy targets.
Poland's energy sector is based on coal, and the resulting carbon emissions from power plants is a black spot in Europe, says Brussels.
The government has pledged to diversify energy sources and introduce technology to help minimise carbon dioxide emissions. However, the programme will be introduced over a period of two decades.
In the meantime, Poland must pay costs for the continued emission of carbon dioxide from power plants, leading to the leap in prices.
“We expected that energy would get more expensive due to climate policy,” said Henryk Kalis from the Forum of Consumers of Energy and Gas.
“But not that much,” he told the Rzeczpospolita daily.
“If it comes to this, we would expect financial compensation from the government,” he declared. (nh/pg)
