A contract has been signed for the completion of one of two sections of an emergingmotorway in Central Poland, after a Chinese consortium was compelledto abandon the project.
As had been stated inthe media earlier this month, the contract went to a consortium offirms, Eurovia and Warbud.
The two cooperatingfirms will handle the A section of the A2 motorway, between Strykowand Konotopa.
Anxiety over thecompletion of the motorway has been heightened by the fact thatPoland wants to finish a number of major infrastructural projectsprior to the Euro 2012 championships, which are being co-hosted bythe Ukraine.
Chinese consortiumCOVEC finally abandoned the motorway in late June, owing to financialproblems.
The project got off toa bad start, as potential Polish sub-contractors boycotted the job, amid fears that the Chinese – who had cut a competitive deal withthe government – would set a pattern of undercutting localconstruction companies.
The General Directoratefor National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) has said that talksregarding the other abandoned part of the motorway, section C, havenot been concluded.
However, as had earlier been reported, theDolnoslaskie Surowce Skalne company appears to have all but signed onthe dotted line. (nh/pg)
