Chinese road building chief gets chop

The magazine Caixin Century writes that COVEC president Fang Yuanming has been dismissed after a Chinese audit following the company having to pull out of the A2 motorway building programmme - a major part of Poland's preperations for the Euro 2012 football championships.

Ignorance of the European market, conflicts within the consortium and other examples of mismanagment led to the company having to cancel the contract in May this year, writes the magazine.

Earlier this month, one section of the A2 motorway near the central city of Lodz was handed over to the Eurovia and Warbud firms for completion.

Last week, COVEC lost an appeal with Poland's Department of Public Procurement, arguing that awarding the road-building commission to a second party without a tender beforehand is in breach of law. (pg)
