Nuclear power to provide 20% of Poland’s energy mix by 2045: official

"Over the next 20 years we aim to build six reactors, and this will be up to 6 GW of electricity produced, which will represent about 20 percent of energy demand or production in Poland by 2040 to 2045," Piotr Naimski, the Polish government's pointman on strategic energy infrastructure, said on Tuesday.

Poland’s Energy Minister Krzysztof Tchórzewski said in May that his country was preparing to build its first nuclear power plant, a project that the government plans to complete by 2033.

Naimski, who serves as Secretary of State for Strategic Energy Infrastructure, told public broadcaster Polish Radio on Tuesday that plans provided for building more than one nuclear power plant in Poland.

"This is still being discussed and decisions are still being made, but there will be more than one [nuclear power plant in Poland], probably two," Naimski said.

Poland last month signed a memorandum of understanding with the United States on cooperation in civilian nuclear energy.

The signing of the document in Washington coincided with Polish President Andrzej Duda's visit to the White House.

Poland's Tchórzewski was at the time quoted as saying that “there is a strong will from the United States to cooperate with Poland" as his country prepared to build its first nuclear power plant.
