Illegal foreign workers ordered out of Poland

Polish border guards say they have ordered a group of illegal foreign workers to leave the country after a crackdown in its northeastern Warmia and Mazuria region.

The group included six Ukrainians and citizens of India, Nepal and Georgia, according to a spokeswoman for border guards, Mirosława Aleksandrowicz.
They have been caught working illegally as manual labourers near the northeastern towns of Ełk and Olecko, Poland’s PAP news agency reported on Monday.
"They worked illegally in Poland; they had no work permits," Aleksandrowicz said, as quoted by the PAP news agency.
A newspaper reported last year that Polish companies had recruited thousands of workers from India, Nepal and Bangladesh as Poland opened its doors wider to foreign labour.
In a survey last year, 21 percent of Polish employers said they hired workers from neighbouring Ukraine.
Unemployment in Poland dropped to 5.6 percent in April this year, from 5.9 percent in March, the country’s labour minister said earlier this month.
