The number of passengers exceeded 310 million, more than 6.5 million up on 2017, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency has said, citing an annual report by the Office of Rail Transport regulator.
The head of the office, Ignacy Góra, was cited by IAR as saying the increase was partially the result of efforts to modernise Polish railways, produce shorter travel times and encourage passengers to pick trains over other means of transportation.
Freight traffic also rose, with rail carriers transporting over 250 million tonnes of cargo in 2018, up 4.3 percent on 2017.
