Speaking in Sydney, Australia, Andrzej Duda said that Poland was working to diversify its energy supplies and that its energy sector was going through a period of intense change.

While Poland heavily relies on coal “as the key engine and guarantor” of its energy security, it has begun importing large quantities of liquefied natural gas (LNG) via a terminal in its northwestern city of Świnoujście, and it is also building a gas pipeline—called the Baltic Pipe—to bring gas from Norway, Duda said as he opened a Polish-Australian Energy Forum in Sydney on Tuesday.

He added: “We aim at becoming an energy hub for the region of Eastern and Central Europe, as part of the Three Seas Initiative.”

The Three Seas Initiative aims to boost cooperation among countries between the Black, Baltic and Adriatic Seas.

The Polish president on Monday discussed ideas for security, defence and energy ties with Australia during a visit to Canberra.

Duda's five-day trip to Australia and New Zealand is the first official visit by a Polish president to these two countries since Poland emerged from communism in 1989, public broadcaster Polish Radio's IAR news agency has reported.
