Almost 2 million passengers at Warsaw airport in July: report

In July last year, the airport processed 1.7 million passengers, Poland’s PAP news agency has reported, citing figures from the airport.

The airport said it had almost 9 million passengers travelling on international routes and nearly 1 million on domestic flights in the first seven months of this year.

The number of travellers using Warsaw’s Chopin Airport for international flights between the start of January and the end of July rose by almost 20 percent from the same period in 2017, the PAP news agency reported.

Warsaw's Chopin Airport is the largest in Poland. Last year it was used by 15.8 million passengers, up a hefty 23 percent on 2016, according to PAP.

Poland’s president in early June greenlighted an ambitious plan to build a large new airport in the centre of the country.

The new airport, to be built between the capital Warsaw and the central city of Łódź, is expected to handle up to 100 million passengers a year and be one of the largest hub airports in Europe after it is completed in 2027.

Rafał Milczarski, CEO of Poland’s state-owned airline LOT, has said that the new central airport is needed for the carrier to expand and launch new connections as Warsaw's Chopin Airport is nearing capacity.
