The estimated cost of the factory is at least EUR 50 million, the Polish daily said.

The plant will be a fully-fledged production rather than an assembly facility, according to reports.

BMW has been assembling its 3, 5 and 7 series models as well as X1, X3, X4, X5 and X6 vehicles in Kaliningrad since 1999, Rzeczpospolita reported.

Talks about the construction of a production plant Kaliningrad have been conducted since 2012, the daily said.

BMW put the talks on ice due to an economic crisis in Russia, then resumed them in late 2016, according to Rzeczpospolita.

The German carmaker was interested in three locations: the Moscow region, St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad, the daily reported. It added that the German firm registered its BMW-Rusland Automotiv company in Kaliningrad in January.

The automotive industry is an important sector in Kaliningrad. Due to the exclave’s proximity to the EU border, many companies assemble their cars there, Rzeczpospolita said.
