Last year, households across the 28-nation European Union spent close to EUR 130 billion, or 1.6 percent of their total consumption expenditure, on alcoholic beverages, the EU’s statistics office, the Eurostat, said in a report.
It ranked Poland among EU member states in which households set aside the largest proportions of their total expenditure for alcohol.
Households in the three Baltic states, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, devoted the largest share of their total consumption expenditure to alcoholic beverages, at 5.6 percent, 4.8 percent and 4.2 percent respectively, Eurostat said.
They were followed by the Czech Republic and Poland (each 3.6 percent), and Hungary and Finland (each 2.9 percent), it added.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the lowest proportions of household spending on alcoholic beverages were recorded in Spain (0.8 percent), and Greece and Italy (each 0.9 percent), Eurostat said.
