Debts owed by businesses selling goods online in Poland have shot up by a third over the last year, according to the country’s National Debt Register.

In October 2016, online retailers in Poland owed PLN 172 million. Now that figure has risen to over PLN 231.1 million (USD 64m, EUR 54.5m), the National Debt Register said.
Experts have warned that customers should be cautious in the run-up to the Christmas shopping season.
"If a store owes money to goods suppliers, we may never receive the present we have ordered,” said Mirosław Sędłak of the Rzetelna Firma (Trustworthy Firm) initiative, which awards companies certificates confirming they are not listed in the National Debt Register as owing money.
