Polish PM hints at ‘good news’ on Baltic Pipe gas plan

Poland aims to diversify supplies by connecting its gas system with deposits situated in the North Sea. The planned Baltic Pipe is to transport gas to Poland from Norway via Denmark.

Szydło was asked by Poland’s Do Rzeczy weekly about diversification of supplies ahead of forthcoming talks with Russia on a new gas contract.

"We are doing everything so that we don’t have to act under any pressure," Szydło said.

She told Do Rzeczy: "I cannot talk about details today. In recent weeks I have had a series of talks with the prime minister of Denmark. Both sides are keen to bring this project to a close. Negotiations are now underway and I hope that we will soon be able to announce good news."

Szydło added: “We also have an alternative plan if the Baltic Pipe project were not completed within the specified deadline.”

The planned gas pipeline to supply Poland from the North Sea is hoped to be constructed in five or six years, Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said after talks with his Norwegian counterpart in February.
