Lotos has acquired stakes in five oil licences in the North Sea, and PGNiG in two exploration and extraction licences in the Norwegian Sea.

The Polish companies decided to minimize risks and to team up with Norwegian multinational Statoil for the projects.

Lotos and PGNiG, which are both state-controlled, have indicated in recent months that they want to increase their presence in Norway.

Starting from 2022, PGNiG wants to send gas from Norway to Poland through a network including the planned Baltic Pipe pipeline.

PGNiG chief Piotr Woźniak said: “We treat our involvement in operations on the Norwegian Continental Shelf as extremely promising for the entire capital group, and measures aiming to enable the import of resources from deposits there to Poland are one of the most important tasks for PGNiG.”

Woźniak said last September that by 2022 PGNiG wants to increase production from its fields in Norway to 2.5 billion cubic metres a year, five times more than at present.
