According to the Polish development ministry, the companies, two of the world’s biggest players in the aviation service industry, will build a centre to service engines in south-western Poland. Some 600 jobs are expected to be created as a result.

The choice of location for the project was announced on Monday at a joint press conference with officials from GE and Lufthansa Technik.

The new centre will be located in the Legnica Special Economic Zone.

Deputy Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that GE and LT chose the region for its highly educated labour force.

"Selecting [the region] as the location for a joint project by GE and Lufthansa is further proof that our country is ready to receive new, technologically advanced projects," Morawiecki was quoted as saying in a statement.

"This investment will have a very significant impact on strengthening the sector, which today, thanks to top specialists such as engineers and aviation technicians, is becoming a Polish speciality."

In recent months, Poland has attracted several foreign investments in the automotive and aviation industries. In May, German carmaker Daimler announced it planned to build an engine plant in south-west Poland. Production is expected to start in 2019.

In late November, British engineering firm Rolls-Royce said it would open a R&D facility in south-eastern Poland, employing up to 3,000 people. (rg/pk)
