The report, by pollster GfK, said that on average there is one discount store for every 11,000 Poles, although in cities like Warsaw the figure is closer to 13,800 and in Poznań, closer to 6,300.

The highest saturation of discount stores is in medium-sized cities, such as Ostrołęka, Słupsk, and Jelenia Góra, where each store caters for fewer than 5,000 people on average.

By far the biggest player in the market is Biedronka, owned by Portuguese retail chain Jeronimo Martins, with some 2,700 locations around the country. The second largest chain in Poland is operated by German Lidl, with some 520 locations around Poland. (rg)
