Jan Kulczyk, Poland's richest man who controls about a fifth of the sales of new vehicles in the country, is to sell his interests in the automobile market.
Kulczyk cemented his position as early as the 1980s, before the free market emerged, when he managed to secure a deal as sole importer of new Volkswagen cars to Poland. Kulczyk is now selling his interests back to the German company, with an eye to focusing on other fields.
The businessman, who hails from the central city of Bydgoszcz, amassed an empire of some 195 car dealerships, principally selling Volkswagens and Skodas, as well as Audis and Porsches, the latter proving an increasingly popular choice, as Poland's newly moneyed class continued to grow.
It has been reported that Kulczyk intends to focus on fuel, energy and infrastructure - areas in which he is already well-established.
According to Wprost magazine, his fortune is estimated at 7.8 billion zloty (2.4 billion USD). (nh/pg)
