On Friday, the committee unanimously approved the nomination backed by President Andrzej Duda. The head of state acted on a proposal put forward by the outgoing NBP chief, Marek Belka, whose term in office expires on 11 June.

"If I am to become the next central bank governor, I will make sure [the National Bank of Poland] is independent," Glapiński assured the parliamentarians.

"I can promise you that regardless of who is in power, I will never allow for an open dispute with the finance minister," he said, adding that his six-year stint as a member of the Monetary Policy Council attests to his stance.

A former economic advisor to the late President Lech Kaczyński, Glapiński was appointed member of the Monetary Policy Council in 2010. After his term in office ended in February, Glapiński was appointed to NBP's management board in March.

The final decision on Adam Glapiński's candidacy will be taken at a plenary session of the Lower House of Parliament. (aba)
