The embargo introduced last year by Russia, has led to an increased interest in Polish fruit on other world markets among them Asia. The first batch of Polish apples left for Vietnam recently.

The interest in Polish apples in Asia will however involve a change of the kind of fruit grown in Poland. The consumers in Asia differ from their European counterparts, preferring large, evenly-coloured fruit, for which they are ready to pay more.

Poland is the largest apple producer in the EU. This year’s harvest due to the summer drought might be smaller amounting only to some three million tons. (ab/rg/rk)
