According to Lucjan Zwolak, Deputy Chairman of the Agricultural Market Agency, Poland has exceeded quotas by 8 percent for the first seven months of the 2014/2015 financial year.
The most recent figures on the purchase of milk show a slight decline, but not enough to see off the threat of fines.
If the level does not fall by at least 8 percent, producers will be fined PLN 0.80 for every litre over the limit.
“We urge farmers to take the appropriate decision,” Zwolak said.
He added that efforts by the Polish government to influence the European Commission to drop prospective sanctions may prove ineffective.
The quotas on milk production are due to be suspended on 1 April 2016. (nh/rk)
