“Over the last 15 years, labour productivity in Poland grew much faster than in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia. Wages grew two and a half times slower. Those who do not succeed, leave to [do menial jobs] in London or Dublin,” Belka said on Monday during the handing out ceremony at the Warsaw Stock Exchange on Mondayof the Lesław A. Paga scholarships.

“But some succeed [...] It is with them that we mostly meet. But some others clench their teeth and are angry. Yesterday and two weeks ago, we received a red card from them. I do not agree with that, but I understand. And even more I would have understood it, if they had voted for stable left-wing and right-wing opposition parties, rather than voting for a comedian,” Belka said.

Both the first stage and second stage of the presidential election were won by Law and Justice (PiS) candidate Andrzej Duda, who beat incumbent President Bronisław Komorowski.

The governor of the NBP is a politically-appointed position. Belka's predecessor at the Bank, Sławomir Skrzypek was an aide of former President Lech Kaczyński (co-founder of the PiS party), and both Skrzypek and Kaczyński died in the 2010 Smoleńsk plane crash. (rg)
