State consumer protection watchdog Rospotrebnadzor (The Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare) has claimed that a Polish processed cheese that had previously been exempt from the ban does not meet ''technical regulations.''
The product in question was produced by Poland's Ostrowia firm.
Imports of many types of European cheese, as well as other food products, had been suspended by Moscow in August, following sanctions against Russia over the Ukrainian crisis. Processed cheese had escaped the ban.
Rospotrebnadzor noted in a statement that the ban has been in place since Friday.
One of the most significant embargos to date was on the import of Polish apples (40 percent of Russia's apple imports had been from Poland), a move that prompted Poles to buy more homegrown apples, amid a far-reaching campaign. (nh)
