The price of a basket of goods for preparing the traditional Wigilia Christmas Eve dinner in Poland has dropped five percent over the previous year.
This, Rzeczpospolita daily explains, is only the second drop in prices over the last decade. The last was in 2010.
This year a Christmas basket costs PLN 96 (about USD 28) – while in 2004, the same products cost PLN 69. That is the equivalent of just under 20 dollars at today’s exchange rates.
The largest drop was seen in vegetables. “This year we had an exceptional harvest of fruits and vegetables, which now translates into a decline in prices,” a food wholesaler said. (rg)
