The fish farms in Zator have announced that over 160 metric tons of carp are ready for shipping to supermarkets across the country in the run-up to Christmas.
The Zator carp is the only type of this fish which is EU certified in the country, holding Protected Designation of Origin status since 2011.
Jerzy Adamek, director of the Zator fish farm – Rybacki Zakład Doświadczalny – said that this year the price of Zator carp will be low, with bulk sales amounting to around 10 zloty (2.5 euro) per kilogramme, which in turn will translate into a shelf price of around 14 zloty.
According to Adamek, despite its high quality, the Zator carp does not differ wildly from other fish of this type farmed in other parts of the country. Nevertheless, the fish farmer said that price is a key factor when it comes to sales.
“Prices for carp is still very low and unsatisfactory,” Adamek told the PAP news agency, adding that “unfortunately Zator carp does not attract a higher price because people still look for the best deals in supermarkets”.
Adamek also highlighted that the viability of carp farming has dropped considerably, with bulk prices currently at levels last seen in 2008 despite higher production costs. (jb)
