Thanks to the bridge, drivers should now be able to travel from the Silesian city of Katowice to Prague in 3 and a half hours.

The bridge had been initially scheduled for completion in 2010, and perhaps owing to the delay, Friday's launch was done without pomp and ceremony, and no major politicians attended.

“It's the latest important investment in Poland's transport network,” Minister of Infrastructure and Development Elzbieta Bienkowska enthused in a statement, just two days before Poles vote in the EU elections.

“It's worth stressing that the bridge in Mszana was completed by Polish companies,” she added.

“Thanks to their exemplary cooperation, as of today we have a convenient motorway connection with the Czechs.”

The commission to lay this section of the motorway had originally been given to Austrian company Alpine Bau, and work began in 2007. However, after a series of problems the company eventually pulled out, arguing that the bridge could not be built safely. (nh)
