Army aims for record year of property sell-offs

The Polish army is aiming to achieve record sales of land and property across the country in 2014, with revenues mainly directed towards the modernisation of the armed forces.

The Military Property Agency (AMW) has set itself the target of 194 million zloty (46.4 million euro) for 2014.
Properties cleared for sale include over 1100 buildings, taking in a combined space of over half a million square metres, as well as 2300 hectares of land.
“Up until March we managed to settle 38 property tenders to the combined value of over 22.3 million zloty (5.3 million euro),” revealed AMW spokesperson Malgorzata Golinska, in an interview with the Puls Biznesu daily.
In 2013, the AMW earned about 57.5 million zloty (13.7 million euro) from the sale of equipment and weaponry that was no longer needed, as well as 135.5 million zloty (32.4 million euro) on the sale of land and buildings.
As much as 93 percent of the earnings from sales in 2014 will be funnelled into the Fund for the Modernisation of Poland's Armed Forces and the Fund for the Modernisation of Public Security. (nh)
