Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, spokesperson of the National Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, Urszula Nelken said that “from today, drivers, including fans going to the […] European Championships, will be able to use the entirety of the motorway between Warsaw and Lodz.”

The comment comes as the last section of the A2 (part of the international E30 trunk route), a 20-kilometre stretch out of the total 90 kilometres spanning Warsaw and Lodz, was opened to traffic on Wednesday night.

The portion of the motorway, known as Section C, was most vulnerable to delays following problems with its construction by the Chinese firm COVEC, which abandoned the site in 2011 after running into financial problems.

Although the surface is completed, parts of the road between Warsaw and Lodz are yet to be fully completed, and as such reduced such speed limits are in operation.

The A2 motorway between Warsaw and Lodz is set to be fully operational by 15 October, with plans to extend the road further east after the end of the Euro 2012 tournament. (jb)
