A film about a Polish rapper who leapt to his death twelve years ago has been premiered at the 37th Gdynia Film Festival, Poland's most important festival of home-grown movies.

You are God (Jestes Bogiem), by Leszek Dawid, tells the tale of Piotr Luszcz, aka Magik, who rose to fame in the 1990s as the frontman of the groups Kaliber 44 and Paktofonika.
“I wanted this film to be universal, so that it satisfies both fans of Paktofonika and those who have nothing to do with rap or hip hop,” the director told Polish Radio following the premiere of the film.
Two former members of Paktofonika were present at the screening.
“I think it was a very big experience for them – to see a film about yourself and a close friend who is no longer among us,” Dawid said.
Magik, who was 22 at the time of his death, jumped out of the window of his apartment at dawn on 26 December 2000. He was survived by a wife and daughter.
Leszek Dawid's debut film, My Name is Ki, won first prize in the Polish section of Krakow's Off Plus Camera Festival last month.
You are God is competing at Gdynia alongside twelve other Polish films. The event ends on Saturday 12 May. (nh)
