Musicians give concert in memory of 9/11 victims

The Warsaw Philharmonic Hall was the venue of a concert to mark the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, with the premier of a special work composed for the occasion by Wojciech Kilar.

The September Symphony by the Polish composer Kilar and Samuel Barber’s Adagio for strings was performed by Sinfonia Iuventus conducted by Tadeusz Wojciechowski.

The symphany is Kilar’s tribute to America and American culture.

Another work by Wojciech Kilar – Missa pro pace – was performed at a concert ‘New York in Memoriam’ at the Pomeranian Philharmonic in Bydgoszcz. A concert ‘in memoriam of the victims of the 9/11 in New York, is also held today at the Centre for Jewish Culture in Kraków. Its programme includes music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Chopin, Liszt, Paderewski and John Lennon.

An exhibition entitled ‘New York before 9/11’ is on at the City Museum in Radom. On display are panoramic postcards of New York and photographs of the city made by Andrzej Leżoń, a member of the museum staff who spent three years there in the 1990s.

Skyscrapers is one of the dominant themes. The exhibition also features the key dates and events in history of New York, as well as quotations by famous people about the city. (mk)
