Jarmusch’s newest film, contending for the Cannes top prize of Palme d’Or, is a zombie apocalypse scenario with a comedic twist and a star-studded cast, including Bill Murray, Chloë Sevigny and Adam Driver.
Jarmusch in 1984 won the Camera d’Or prize at Cannes for his film Stranger Than Paradise.
This year’s festival jury will be chaired by Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu, the filmmaker behind Amores Perros, Babel and Birdman.
Polish-British filmmaker Paweł Pawlikowski is among the festival judges.
Pawlikowski last year won the Cannes festival’s Palme d'Or award for directing his latest production Cold War.
The festival runs until May 25.
