The "Light of Remembrance" award was presented to Bloomfield by the director of the Auschwitz Museum, Piotr Cywiński, at a ceremony in Washington, in the presence of the Polish ambassador to the United States, Piotr Wilczek.

Bloomfield, who has served in her post for 20 years, praised the activities of the Auschwitz Museum, saying it is “at the forefront of the Holocaust memory movement.”

She added that “the work of the Holocaust Museum would not be possible without our ongoing partnership with our many dedicated colleagues at the Auschwitz Museum.”

Bloomfield served as a member of the International Auschwitz Council and has advised museums in many countries.

In 2010, she received the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland from President Lech Kaczyński.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington has welcomed more than 43 million visitors since it opened in 1993.

The Auschwitz Memorial Museum in southern Poland opened in 1947. Last year it attracted 2.1 million visitors from across the world.

The Auschwitz concentration camp was set up by the Germans in occupied Poland in 1940. More than 1.1 million people perished there during World War II, mostly European Jews, but also Poles, Roma, Soviet POWs and prisoners of other nationalities.
