“The Echo” is the result of Rigamonti’s travels to Volhynia in western Ukraine to document the empty space left by former Polish villages and towns which disappeared during genocidal killings carried out by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) between March 1943 and the end of 1944.
The text in the book is by Magdalena Rigamonti, the photographer’s wife.
Born in 1974, Maksymilian Rigamonti is a graduate of the Fine Arts Academy in Łódź. He has won numerous photography awards.
According to Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), which is charged with prosecuting crimes against the Polish nation, some 100,000 Poles died in the Volhynia massacres. (mk/pk)
