A screening of Pawlikowski’s latest feature Cold War was part of the film’s promotion in the race for Academy Awards.

The movie is the official Polish entry for an Oscar in the Best Foreign-Language Film category.

Cold War is a love story between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, set against the backdrop of the Cold War in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The film won Pawlikowski the best director award at this year’s Cannes Festival.

Pawlikowski’s previous feature, Ida, won an Oscar in 2015 for best foreign-language film.

The New York retrospective, which runs until December 16, includes Pawlikowski’s early documentaries made for the BBC and feature films such as Last Resort (2000) and My Summer of Love (2004).

Born in Warsaw in 1957, Pawlikowski left Poland with his family at the age of 14. He first lived in Germany and Italy before moving to Britain. He now resides in Warsaw.
