Poland’s Silesian Quartet to perform in US

The internationally acclaimed Silesian Quartet from Poland is billed to perform at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York on Tuesday.

The concert includes string quartets by 20th-century Polish composers Karol Szymanowski, Grażyna Bacewicz, Witold Lutosławski, and Krzysztof Penderecki.
On Wednesday, the Silesian Quartet will perform the same programme during a festival of Polish music at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago.
Both events are in celebration of the centenary of Poland’s regained independence and have been organised in collaboration with the Polish Cultural Institute in New York and the Warsaw-based Adam Mickiewicz Institute as part of the latter’s Polska Music programme.
Founded in 1978 by a group of students from the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, southern Poland, the Silesian Quartet has long enjoyed a reputation as a top-ranking Polish string quartet. Its repertoire includes over 300 pieces of chamber music, of which more than 100 are by 20th-century composers.
The quartet has premiered numerous works by both Polish and foreign composers and performed at many prestigious festivals at home and abroad.
Last year, the group won the coveted Gramophone Award for its recording of Bacewicz’s string quartets, released by Chandos.
