Int’l music competition in Poland’s Katowice

The Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition has opened in the southern Polish city of Katowice.

A first-time event, the competition aims to promote Polish music, with a focus on the legacy of 20th-century composer Karol Szymanowski.
The competition is being held in five categories: piano, violin, voice, string quartet, and composition. It has been entered by 102 performers and composers from around the world.
The prizewinners will be announced on September 23.
The event’s Honorary Committee includes contemporary Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki and Sir Simon Rattle, a prominent conductor who has done a great deal to make Szymanowski’s music better known internationally.
The competition has been organised by the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR) in Katowice in cooperation with leading Polish musical and cultural institutions.
The next Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition is due to be held in Katowice, a UNESCO Creative City of Music, in 2023.
The output of Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937) includes orchestral and vocal works, chamber compositions, the ballet Harnasie, and the opera King Roger.
