According to the cinema industry website Deadline, the timing is of key significance as the pre-Christmas season marks the start of a promotional campaign preceding the 2019 Academy Awards.
Deadline reports that Amazon, which handles the film’s distribution in the United States, hopes that Cold War will be selected as Poland’s official entry for an Oscar.
Cold War is a passionate love story between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, set against the backdrop of the Cold War in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Released in Polish cinemas on June 8, it has so far attracted an audience of 225,000.
The film won Pawlikowski best director award at the Cannes Festival last month. In 2015, his previous feature Ida won an Oscar for best foreign-language film.
