The film is a love story between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, set against the backdrop of the Cold War in 1950s Stalinist Poland as well as in Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris.
A Polish-French-British co-production, the film was written by Pawlikowski with assistance from prominent Polish writer Janusz Głowacki, who died in August last year.
The cast includes leading Polish actors Joanna Kulig, Tomasz Kot, Agata Kulesza and Borys Szyc.
Kulesza starred in Pawlikowski’s previous film, Ida, which has won an Oscar and BAFTA for best foreign-language film as well as three European Film Awards.
Cold War is the first Polish film competing for the Palme d'Or in Cannes in 37 years. In 1981, Andrzej Wajda’s Man of Iron received the highest accolade at the event.
