The final stage of the competition starts in the Polish capital on Thursday with performances by Haruma Sato and Michiaki Ueno of Japan.
The other two finalists, Yibai Chen of China and Oliver Herbert of the United States, will appear before the Warsaw audience on Friday.
The programme of the competition's final stage includes two concertos. One is chosen by each participant on their own and the other is the renowned Cello Concerto by Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994), the Polish composer after whom the event is named.
The Warsaw Philharmonic orchestra is conducted by Marek Moś.
Lutosławski’s Cello Concerto is considered to be one of the composer’s greatest achievements and a gem in the international cello repertoire.
Lutosławski wrote the piece in 1969-1970 and dedicated it to the famous Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, who gave its world premiere in London in 1970.
The results of the competition are to be announced late on Friday, with a prizewinners’ concert scheduled for Saturday.
Launched in 1997, the Lutosławski Cello Competition is being held for the 11th time. The next one is scheduled for 2021.
