Oniszczuk’s climbing partner, priest Peter Dubovski, survived the accident and called emergency services for help.

The rescue crew was yet unable to use a helicopter due to strong winds.

Priest Oniszczuk was in critical condition when the team located him three hours later with the help of search and rescue dogs. Rescuers tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate the priest.

Prof. Dariusz Kowalczyk, the priest’s colleague and friend, told Polish Radio that Jacek Oniszczuk was an outstanding scholar specializing in the New Testament.

This academic year the 51-year-old Jesuit was appointed the head of the Biblical Theology Department at the Pontifical Georgian University in Rome.
