The piece is being performed at the modernist headquarters of the National Museum in Kraków, where an original score of the work is currently on display.
“Harnasie,” composed by Szymanowski between 1923 and 1931, premiered in Prague in 1935.
A year later it was presented to great acclaim in Paris with choreography by Serge Lifar, who danced the principal part of Harnaś. The Polish premiere took place in Poznań in 1938, two years after the composer’s death.
The work reflects Szymanowski’s fascination with the folk music of Polish highlanders from the Tatra mountains region. Its plot depicts the abduction of a bride on her wedding day by Harnaś, the leader of the Harnasie, a band of highland robbers.
The Kraków production coincides with the 80th anniversary of Szymanowski’s death.
