The annual Polish Film Festival opens in Gdynia on the Baltic coast on Monday, with a screening of Loving Vincent, the world’s first fully painted feature film.

The Polish-British co-production, directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, tells the story of the life and mysterious death of the painter Vincent van Gogh.
Seventeen features are vying for the Golden Lions award in the main competition, including eight directorial debuts and two second films by up-and-coming directors.
Agnieszka Holland’s thriller Pokot (Spoor), which is Poland’s official entry for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign-Language Film category, is among the candidates for the Golden Lions.
Awards will also be given out in the Short Film and Another Look categories. A special event will focus on the 70th anniversary of Polish animation.
The main festival jury is chaired by veteran Polish director Jerzy Antczak, whose credits include Nights and Days (1975), one of the greatest box-office successes in Polish cinema.
Now 87, Antczak has resided in the United States since the 1980s, for many years teaching at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Film, Theater and Television.
This year is the 42nd time the Polish Film Festival is being held. (mk/gs/pk)
