According to the Dziennik Gazeta Prawna daily, 556 of the country’s 1,836 bookstores are in the 16 biggest cities, with only 284 in small towns and 12 in villages.
While it is easy to acquire books online, the paper said, bookstores in small towns and villages play an important role as “cultural institutions,” hosting public readings and cultural events.
However, traditional bookstores find it increasingly difficult to generate profit, with only 12 percent of all books sold in brick-and-mortar stores in Poland, the daily reported.
To boost sales, 70 percent of the country’s bookstores sell books online as well, according to Dziennik Gazeta Prawna. (tf/gs/pk)
